Postdoctoral Fellowship in Language Technology
POSITION AS POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP (reference number: 2009/6364) in Language Technology
available at the Department of Informatics, University of Oslo.
The research group in Language
Technology (LT) at the University
of Oslo (UiO) announces
the position of a postdoctoral research fellow in Language Technology. This
position has a duration of three years, with an expected start date of
September 1, 2009. The position has as its primary goal further academic
qualification after a completed PhD in Computational Linguistics or Computer
Science (with a specialization in Language Technology). The appointment
includes teaching and supervision duties, according to the needs of the
research group, at an average level of one third of the total time. For
background on the LT research environment and the UiO study programme in IT:
Language, Logic, and Psychology, please see:
http://www.ifi.uio.no/research/groups/lns/lt.html
http://www.uio.no/studier/program/it-slp/
The LT research group has its
focus in hybrid approaches to Natural Language Processing (NLP), and the successful
candidate will have competency in both rule-based and statistical methods within
Computational Linguistics, as well as an understanding of the use of these
methods in core NLP tasks like parsing, generation, machine translation, or
others. The group pursues a predominantly applied research agenda, hence at
least a minimal level of implementation experience is a prerequisite for this position.
Finally, a personal interest and readiness to contribute to teaching in
Computational Linguistics (at the undergraduate and graduate levels) and
supervision of MSc candidates is expected; prior teaching experience is a plus.
The postdoctoral research
associate will interact closely with ongoing research at the UiO Language
Technology group, and experience that connects to the group activities (or directly
complements these) will be an additional advantage, but not a requirement. Such
experience could comprise, for example, prior knowledge of some of the
frameworks used (HPSG and MRS), methods (constraint-based parsing or
generation, MaxEnt or SVM modeling), resources (the LinGO English Resource
Grammar), software (from the DELPH-IN open-source repository), or programming
languages (Common Lisp or C++). The University of Oslo is a multi-lingual environment,
where knowledge of Norwegian is not a prerequisite. UiO wants to increase the number of women
among its scientific staff; female applicants are especially encouraged and
will be prioritized, assuming otherwise equivalent qualifications.
Applications should include (a) a detailed resume
(providing complete information on education, prior employment, teaching
competency and experience, a list of publications, and any other relevant
expertise), (b) contact information for at least two academic references, (c)
copies of up to five scientific publications, and (d) a statement of research
purpose. All applications will be evaluated by an independent search committee,
where candidates may be invited for interviews or a trial lecture. We expect
the selection process to be complete by mid-July.
