The position is open to candidates from either grammar-driven or data-driven backgrounds. A basic understanding of the foundations of natural language processing (NLP) is a prerequisite. Additionally, experience in the following areas will be a benefit:
· constraint-based grammar and unification-based parsing;
· statistical approaches to NLP, specifically MaxEnt modeling;
· efficient large-scale processing, including grid computation.
The purpose of the PhD position is research training leading to the successful completion of a doctoral degree. The fellowship requires admission to the research-training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Firstly, applicants must have obtained undergraduate (BSc level or equivalent) and postgraduate (MSc level or equivalent) qualifications. Together this should represent approximately five years of full time study after the completion of
