PhD position in Language Technology
POSITION AS PhD in Language Technology (Ref. no.: 07/7949)
available at the Department of Informatics, University of Oslo.
The position has a duration of 4
years with 25% compulsory work (teaching).
The position belongs to the Research
Group in Logic and Natural Languages (LNS) at the Department of Informatics, University of Oslo.
For background on the research environment, please see http://www.ifi.uio.no/forskning/grupper/lns/ and http://www.emmtee.net. LNS has a
focal area in computationally intensive language technology, specifically the
application of hybrid, semantic parsing technology to large document
collections. The group collaborates
closely with the Center for the Study of Language and Information (CSLI) at Stanford University (see
http://lingo.stanford.edu) and the international Deep Linguistic Processing
with HPSG Initiative (DELPH-IN; see http://www.delph-in.net). The general research direction of this
position is the application of HPSG parsing to WikipediA articles, aiming for
accurate and efficient semantic analysis of large bodies of text. This position will have its focus on English
data. Specific aspects of the PhD
project may include (a) high-efficiency hybrid parsing approaches, including
distribution over a kilo-node HPC cluster; (b) near-deterministic, incremental
parsing with large-scale HPSG implementations; and (c) the integration of
linguistic constraints and stochastic processes to better balance processing
robustness, accuracy, and efficiency.
The position is open to candidates
from either grammar-driven or data-driven backgrounds. A basic understanding of the foundations of
natural language processing (NLP) is a prerequisite. Additionally, experience in the following
areas will be a benefit:
· constraint-based grammar and unification-based parsing;
· statistical approaches to NLP, specifically MaxEnt modeling;
· efficient large-scale processing, including grid computation.
The purpose of the PhD position is
research training leading to the successful completion of a doctoral
degree. The fellowship requires
admission to the research-training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and
Natural Sciences. Firstly, applicants
must have obtained undergraduate (BSc level or equivalent) and postgraduate (MSc
level or equivalent) qualifications.
Together this should represent approximately five years of full time
study after the completion of European
Upper Secondary
School or International Baccalaureate. For more information see:
http://www.matnat.uio.no/forskning/utdanning/english/phd_programme_presentation.html
Appointment to a research fellowship
is conditional upon admission to the research training programme. An approved plan for the research training
must be submitted no later than one month after taking up the position, and
admission approved within three months. For
more information see:
http://www.uio.no/admhb/reglhb/personal/tilsettingvitenskapelig/ansettelsesvilkar/guidelinesresearchfellowship.xml
The University of Oslo
wishes to achieve a more equal distribution of scientific employees between the
genders. Female applicants are
encouraged to apply.
UiO has an agreement for all
employees, aiming to secure rights to research results a.o.

qualifications.
Deadline for applications: August 31, 2007
Reference number: PhD 07/7949
The applications (in English or in a Scandinavian language) marked with
reference number 07/7949 including a curriculum vitae and complete information
about the applicant’s education (both at the bachelor and master level), job
experience, scientific publications, outline of research ambitions, and at
